Our Best Immune-boosters and Why?
Health is the cornerstone of everything and it affects how we show up in the world, how we show up for others, how we show up to serve and how happy we are.
It's pretty hard to feel happy and good about life and even others when our health is failing us and a huge part of staying healthy is having a strong immune system to protect us from microbial invasion (such as viruses).
With the current crisis (COVID-19), people far and wide are beginning to understand how truly important their wellbeing is, including their immune systems.
Many of us have never seen anything like this in our lifetime like what we are seeing now, and I don't mean necessarily the viral pandemic, but the mass fear and chaos it's creating globally...
The thing that we need to remember is that stress, fear and panic affects the immune system and we need our immune systems to stay strong and do their job.
We also need to keep feeding our body what it needs to be indestructible and what things make it so?
- A good diet (lots of fresh fruit and veggies and whole foods in the most natural state and as much organic as we can afford/access)
- A calm mind so we keep our nervous system, brain, gut and immune system at their most powerful. Try free guided meditations online or apps like 'Headspace' or 'Calm' app.
- Fresh air, pure water, sunshine and exercise
- The best supplementation to fill nutritional gaps and boost gut health, energy and immunity.
So with all of that said, I would like to answer a question that we often get asked (even more so lately) about what Perfect Supplements are best for boosting the immune system to help protect against infection from viruses and bacteria.
You might want to go and make a cuppa as there are quite a few in the range with super immunity powers...
Pronounced Ah-sigh-ee, this incredible super berry from the deep jungles of the Amazon rainforest is brimming with antioxidants for immune wellbeing and also omegas 3,6 & 9.
The Role of Omega 3 in immune health
Açai is a good source of omega 3,6 and 9 (fatty acids) and omega 3, in particular, is known to have a positive effect on the body's immune system.
This conclusion was taken from a study on the effects of omega 3 on the immune system:
"The n-3 fatty acids influenced the production of PGE2 and the microbicidal activity of macrophages by increasing the production of NO between the initial and later phases of PCM. How the dietary fatty acids alter eicosanoids and the relationship with macrophage microbicidal activity remains unknown but could be due to an alteration in the levels of the eicosanoid precursor. More studies using LNA should be conducted to elucidate the effect of n-3 and n-6 PUFA on the immune response during experimental murine PCM."1
Perfect Organic Açai is 100% natural, free from chemicals, GMOs, fillers, sugars, preservatives and additives. It is grown through fairly-traded working conditions, so when you purchase this product, you are helping to support communities.
It's very simple to add to your diet, simply add to smoothies, yoghurt or get creative and make smoothie bowls.
We have a fantastic eBook with many smoothie recipes if you're looking for some inspiration or guidance, it comes with video tutorial links (from mwah) as well to take you through the process.
Organic Chlorella & Spirulina
Both chlorella ad spirulina is species of micro-algae and they grow in freshwater ponds. These incredible foods from nature are incredible nutrient-dense and are known to enhance wellbeing in people (ad animals) immensely!
They are shown to help boost energy, digestive function and immune health.
In studies of both animals and humans, chlorella showed potential to enhance immune function but in another research, test tube and animal studies suggest spirulina may boost the immune system.
With their incredible nutritional profiles, when combined they are a force to be reckoned with!
Chlorella contains more vitamin A than spirulina (at 287% of Daily Value) and spirulina contains more copper than chlorella (85% DV).
Vitamin A is essential for a healthy immune system and copper helps our body to form red blood cells.
Easily added to a person's diet through smoothies, but you can add to food as well, I have made spirulina guacamole and it was delicious!
Fun Fact: if you add spirulina to a small amount of coconut milk, you have got a complete meal that you could literally survive from for months! Maybe even years, if food supplies ever dried up.
Spirulina has been noted in an article in 'The Guardian' to help malnutrition in developing countries, that's how much of a nutrient-dense food it truly is.
Organic Coconut Oil
Coconuts are inarguably an incredible food source and have been for thousands of years. People of many nations and islands have enjoyed and thrived on the humble coconut with all its many benefits and wonderful versatility.
One of those wonderful things is the oil of the coconut.
Eating coconut oil can add many healthy benefits, everything from improving heart health, to brainpower, energy and even protection from microbial infection (bacterial and viral).
So go nuts for coconuts! ;)
PS: coconut oil is a relatively inexpensive way to boost one's immune system.
Organic Cordyceps Sinensis
According to webmd.com, the popular TCM medicinal 'mushroom' (which is really more of a fungus but let's keep moving forward), Cordyceps Sinensis may improve the immune system by stimulating cells and specific immune chemicals.
It has been known (and used) for centuries by wise TCM practitioners for helping improve respiratory function and lung health, which could be especially beneficial for respiratory conditions that run rampant during cold and flu season!
Mounting evidence shows that Cordyceps has an immunomodulatory effect in the body (in other words, it can help improve immune function). This is a very good thing, especially when we live in a world that can compromise our precious immune system.
Grass-fed Liver (supplement)
If you've been following us for some time now, you will no doubt have heard me harp on about the many 'magical powers' of eating liver (in specific, taking a liver supplement). Sure, you can go out and buy grass-fed fresh livers (if you can find them) and painstakingly cook them slowly for hours or...
You can get your liver in a time-saving, convenient supplement form that's available in a capsule or powder form, so simple! You can take it where ever you go.
I know what I'd prefer. What about you?
Organ meats such as liver are incredibly nutritious and contain some key vitamins and minerals needed for a well functioning immune system. A healthy immune system will protect your body from unwanted invaders like viruses.
If you're new to learning about liver as a superfood or even as a supplement there's something you must know...
There are a common misconception (and that's exactly what it is - a misconception), that liver stores toxins, therefore it must contain toxins so why would you eat it?
This is untrue.
The role of a liver is to filter out toxins and not to store them as some folks think, why on earth would it "store toxins"? Think about it.
It does, however, store nutrients thus making it one of the world's most potent superfoods for us to enjoy and benefit from.
Check out my video on the safety of eating liver and it's many potential benefits
Liver is a dense food and contains vital nutrients such as vitamin A, B's, co-Q10 enzyme, D3, choline, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, selenium, zinc and more!
Vitamin A and zinc, in particular, are what make liver such a great immune-boosting superfood.
If you don't enjoy eating it, take it in simple supplement form.
When we are low or depleted in magnesium (an important mineral and electrolyte) this can temporarily depress the functioning of our immune system. This is a MASSIVE realisation for myself personally and I am now going to ramp up my magnesium intake through extra magnesium powder, magnesium oil spray, Epsom salts and leafy green veggies.
Our bodies can be depleted in magnesium in many different ways such as through exercise, stress and poor absorption in the gut.
Improve gut absorption by taking a high-quality hydrolyzed collagen powder daily such as this one.
If you're looking for a natural magnesium powder, free from synthetic aftertaste and better absorbability, look o further than the Perfect Magnesium powder (magnesium citrate), popular amongst our many customers and having great results.
If you haven't heard of Matchinga or are yet to try it, let me just give you the lowdown and you might discover one of the keys to unlocking vibrant health and potent immunity!
Matchinga might be one of your favourite tools in your immune-boosting toolbox...
So what is Matchinga? It's a new word for many because it's never been done before and you won't see it anywhere else in the world because it was named and invented by Kristen Morelli, co-founder of Perfect Supplements.
It's a blend of organic Japanese matcha and organic moringa leaf powders and boy does to pack a nutritional punch!
First up, we have matcha which is the most incredible green tea powder and bursting with immune-boosting antioxidants, then we've got moringa which should be called mother nature's multivitamin!
Seriously, moringa contains so much nutrition, it's almost in a league of its own.
Just 21g of moringa powder contains the following:
- Protein: 2 grams
- Vitamin B6: 19% of the RDA
- Vitamin C: 12% of the RDA
- Iron: 11% of the RDA
- Riboflavin (B2): 11% of the RDA
- Vitamin A (from beta-carotene): 9% of the RDA
- Magnesium: 8% of the RDA
It's been shown to have an immunomodulatory effect on the system (improves immune function).
You can add it to smoothies, yoghurt or hot water with raw honey to make an immunity tea!
Check out my video below for the recipe.
Rhodiola is a very special herb indeed! Not only is it an adaptogen (helps the body adapt to all kinds of stressors) but it has many other wonderful superpowers and one of those powers is its ability to regulate the innate immune response genes and promote an effective antiviral immune response.
This wonderful herb (used by the Vikings) can be incredible for energy and stamina and probably why it was so popular amongst Vikings and is also gaining popularity in athletic communities for similar reasons.
In the Book 'The Rhodiola Revolution' the authors Richard P Brown and Patricia Gerbarg (both MD's) speak about other benefits such as prevention of altitude/mountain sickness, reducing anxiety, helping with depression, weight loss and more.
When researching, I discovered that Rhodiola can also help with endocrine disorders, chronic fatigue and general fatigue.
It has even been mentioned to help prevent neurological disorders such as dementia, as its active compound (Salidroside) has the ability to inhibit monoamine oxidase A and B in vitro. The active compound Salidroside has been found to have neuroprotective properties.
We always encourage people to do their own research and one must realise that prevention cannot come solely from a single herb, but rather a holistic lifestyle and a whole approach - taking into account the power of our thoughts, emotions, diet, spirit etc.
Revive (Açai, Cordyceps, Rhodiola and Grapeseed Extract)
This product has so many incredible immune-boosters in one bottle so it can save you time and money as you're not having to take so many different things separately.
As you've read above, Açai, Cordyceps and Rhodiola can help to boost the immune system and protect the body but what about grapeseed extract for immunity?
Well, it has similar capabilities. Grapeseed extract is great for counteracting the effect of free radicals and it can also help to promote immune health by fighting bacterial and viral infections.
It's called Revive but I think it should have been called 'Immunity in a bottle' :)
