Why Collagen in Coffee?

If you're looking for a safe and affordable way to thwart wrinkles and improve joint health, look no further than collagen! As we age, our body begins to produce less collagen. However, new studies suggest that increasing your collagen intake — both from diet and supplementation — can allow us to age gracefully.

Fortunately, enjoying these benefits is as easy as adding a scoop of collagen to your morning coffee. But before we get into why to add collagen to coffee, let’s take a step back and talk a little about collagen.

What is Collagen?

If you aren't familiar with collagen, it's the most prominent protein source in the human body and is found in your bones, skin and connective tissues — it's basically the glue keeping us together! In addition to your collagen production tapering off with age, your collagen stores will deplete faster if your lifestyle includes smoking or unprotected sun exposure.

The majority of collagen in the body (80-90%) is made of:

  • Type 1: 90% of the body's collagen is Type 1 and is concentrated to your connective tissues, skin, bones and teeth.
  • Type 2: Type 2 is mainly found in the cartilage and helps support joint health - an excellent choice for those with arthritis or even athletes.
  • Type 3: This type of collagen is in the muscles, skin, arteries and organs.

Collagen Supplements

If you're ready to begin supplementing with collagen, certain types of collagen are better to stir into your morning coffee. The following, is the best type of collagen powder for your coffee:

      • Collagen Peptides or Hydrolyzed Collagen: Peptides or hydrolyzed collagen mean the same thing. Collagen protein sources (bovine, chicken, marine) are broken down via water into more bioavailable peptides.

Type 2 Collagen Capsules (not great in coffee due to their chalky, unpleasant texture) is better to consume as a capsule.  If your primary concern is improving your joint health, adding type 2 collagen capsules into your life can help address joint inflammation and improve mobility. The capsules are very easy to take with a glass of water.  Click here to find these.

The Potential Benefits of Collagen

There is nothing easier than purchasing your favourite collagen powder, like our Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder, and adding a scoop of this powerful protein to your morning cup of coffee. With virtually no taste, odour or added flavours, you'll hardly notice it's there!

These are some of the key health benefits to taking collagen:

  • Better Complexion: With age comes the loss of collagen production, your skin dries out, and your skin loses its elasticity. You can't prevent wrinkles from ever happening, but you can soften the age lines by supplementing with collagen.

  • Helps Correct Joint Pain: The loss of collagen production doesn't just mean wrinkles; it also means you're more susceptible to joint pain*. Collagen is found in the connective tissue surrounding your joints, so supplementing with collagen can help treat arthritis symptoms or improve overall joint health.

  • Strengthening Bones: Finally, by adding collagen into your diet, you'll preserve your bone mass, which will prevent bone disorders like osteoporosis.

*While some people say that Perfect Hydrolyzed collagen powder is helping their joints, it is not the one we specifically recommend for joint wellbeing. Please see the Perfect Type II collagen capsules as mentioned above.

Why Add Collagen to Your Coffee?

Perfect Supplements Australia

It may seem a bit strange to add something like collagen to your coffee, but after a little thought,  it will make perfect sense. If you can't start the day without coffee, then it stands to reason you won't forget to add collagen to the coffee you're going to drink anyway!

However, there are a few misconceptions we'd like to clear up before you decide if collagen in your coffee is something worth trying:

  • Heat Does Not Destroy Collagen: It can, but only if the temperature of your coffee exceeds 302ºF (150ºC) — which is unlikely given coffee's typical range is below 205ºF (96ºC).

  • It's Too Complicated: It's simple to add collagen to your coffee; just add a scoop of collagen powder to your coffee and stir it in. Just be sure to always follow the directions on the bottle.

  • You Probably Won’t Notice Collagen in your Coffee: The answer to that is most collagen doesn't have added flavour, and the powder itself doesn't have a prominent scent or taste, so most people don't taste its presence. However, since it is a powder, you will have to stir it well to dissolve it fully. There are of course, the rare few that do taste the collagen but this is extremely rare.

  • Excellent for Keto: If you're looking for another way to amp up your coffee, collagen with a healthy fat like ghee, coconut or MCT oil can help you remain in ketosis.

  • Not Vegan-Friendly: Although the bulk of the collagen products on the market come from animal proteins, new products are coming out to close this gap. For pescatarians, marine* collagen sources and even vegan-friendly options made of yeast and bacteria are hitting the markets.

*There are reasons why Perfect Supplements have not produced a marine collagen and we wrote an entire article about this, so before you make your decision, please be sure to read this here.
