What on Earth is Baobab?
Baobab is a fruit grown mainly in Africa from baobab trees (also known as the "bottle tree"). These super fruits come with a wide range of potential health benefits. From increasing your vitamin and antioxidant intake, weight loss, blood sugar balance, skin health, gut health, bloating, to fighting inflammation, illness and disease, this fruit can be a highly valuable addition to your diet.
In fact, the more I learn about it, the more I am blown away!
How do you say it?
While in some parts of the world, they pronounce it bay-o-barb, here is Australia, we say bei·uh·bab. Click here for the English pronunciation
What does it taste like?
As it is low in both sugar and carbohydrates, it definitely doesn’t have a sweet taste but it is very enjoyable and refreshing. It is citrusy and tart and really livens up any juice or smoothie. You could probably even just have it with water and it would still be fine.
- High in Vitamin C for Immune Health
Vitamin C is important for your body for many reasons. It helps boost the immune system to protect you from illnesses and diseases, it helps the body produce collagen to heal wounds (try the Perfect Hydrolyzed Collagen supplement for added collagen) and protect the skin from ageing, and it helps the body absorb iron.
Baobab is an incredible source of vitamin C; just one tablespoon gives you over half the recommended daily intake for adults. In fact, baobab has up to ten times more vitamin C than oranges, which makes it a great addition to your diet.
Some say that having vitamin C at the same time as you have your collagen supplement can make the collagen work better, though I have seen the Perfect Hydrolyzed collagen work perfectly fine without vitamin C. If you were wanting this combination, you could grab a tub of the Perfect Baobab here and the famous Perfect Hydrolyzed collagen here.

- Antioxidant Properties for Radiant Skin and Anti-ageing
Another great reason to consume baobab is because it’s full of antioxidants and polyphenols. Your body needs these compounds to help protect against free radicals and oxidative damage. They also help prevent inflammation, which can lead to long-term illness and disease. Baobab is a great source for antioxidants that can not only reduce inflammation levels, but protect your body and cells from long-term damage.
Anyone looking to improve their skin’s health and appearance would benefit from consuming this superfood daily. Because of its antioxidants and ability to fight free radicals, this makes it excellent in the anti-ageing category!
- Stabilises Blood Sugar Levels
A surprising but wonderful benefit of baobab is the fact that it can help balance your blood sugar levels. Studies show that baking the extract into bread can actually slow down the release of insulin in your body. Your body’s glycemic response, which would normally be high in response to white bread, can actually be slowed just by the presence of baobab.
If you’re used to feeling a spike in energy after eating white bread but then crashing soon after, baobab could be what you need to feel longer-lasting energy and stabilise your blood sugar long-term.
- Low in Sugar and High in Fibre for Digestion & Gut Health
Another great benefit of baobab is the fact that it’s not just low in calories but also low in sugar, which is unusual for most fruits. A 6g serving of this superfood powder will give you just 14 calories, that is very low!. This means that you can consume baobab freely for its nutritional content and not worry about the calories/sugar you’re consuming.
Speaking of fibre, baobab contains both types of dietary fibre - soluble and insoluble, and it acts as a prebiotic in the gut, making it incredible for the health of your gut microbiome (the gut bug environment in your large intestine).
A happy gut microbiome means better gut health for you and overall health and wellbeing - including mental health as this is strongly connected to the gut as well as hormonal balance, weight, heart health, the immune system, diabetes and much more!
Because baobab feeds the good bacteria 🦠 in your gut it can help with bloating as well!

- Weight Loss and Satiety
Baobab may be a fruit but don't be fooled into thinking it's high sugar! High sugar fruits are really good for you on a nutritional level but when one is trying to lose weight, they can hinder our efforts.
This super fruit is both low in calories/sugar and carbs, high in gut-loving fibre which can help a person in their weight loss journey but it's also the incredible antioxidants this fruit contains.
These come in the form of polyphenols. Polyphenols (as well as dietary fibre) have been shown to help with feelings of fulness (satiety) and a reduction in hunger.
In a study, participants were given similar breakfast smoothies:
1. A smoothie with OJ, frozen mango
2. A smoothie with OJ, frozen mango and Baobab 15g
The participants who consumed the smoothie with Baobab, reported feeling much fuller and for longer. Naturally, when we feel satiated, we feel less hungry and are less likely to graze between snacks and meals and less likely to binge. This makes a huge difference to one's weight loss success.
6. Fluid Retention
Baobab has many other nutritional benefits, including being high in potassium and also a good source of magnesium. Potassium is a crucial mineral in fluid balance and preventing fluid retention. Say goodbye to those nasty canlkes and say hello to your legs and ankles again!
Magnesium also plays a role in preventing fluid retention so be sure to be adequate in these key minerals.
That's Not All...
Baobab really has earned the status of being called a "super fruit" as it can help with all the above but also the following:
- Helps your body to absorb iron
- Assists in alkalising the blood
- May help with circulation
- Can help lower blood pressure
- Contains calcium and magnesium for bone strength and density
- Has cell-protective effects
- Can improve dental health
- Encourages healthy repair and growth of tissues
- Has pain-relieving properties
- Contains both antiviral and antimicrobial properties
- Can help with hormonal imbalances (PMS, perimenopause & menopause)
- Can help with dry scalp
- May help promote strong nails
- It's low-FODMAP so great for people with IBS (irritable Bowel Syndrome)
While fresh baobab fruit can be hard to come by, you can also consume it in powdered form to great results. Simply add the powder to fresh smoothies, juice, water, or even tea. You can also use it in baking, or sprinkled over oatmeal, yoghurt, chia pudding, and more!
By consuming baobab regularly, you’ll reap the many health benefits of this fruit.
