Most of us probably grew up on OJ when we were sick (unless we lived on Costa Rica or the Caribbean)? and while orange juice was an ok source of vitamin C, we had no idea that in the following decades we would discover a much more potent source.

That source is acerola cherries! 🍒

Acerola actually provides 50-100 times the vitamin C compared to oranges and lemons and it is higher in vitamin C than just about every other fruit.

I hadn't actually heard all that much about it until a trip back in 2018 to the USA and Costa Rica. The Morelli family (producer of the Perfect Supplements brand) mentioned that they were in the process of creating an acerola supplement and then when we were down in Costa Rica we saw an acerola bush growing in a yoga retreat that we were staying at.

It wasn't until 2021 that we finally had the Perfect Organic acerola and we couldn't have been happier!

Upon deep research, I began to fall in love with this super fruit and natural vitamin C powder. It does not just contain a natural and absorbable version of vitamin C but also many other important nutrients and cofactors for effectiveness which we will get into soon...

The reason that it took Perfect Supplements so long to create the product is because they never (and I mean never) cut corners when it comes to sourcing.

Every product that they source has to meet their high standards of being:

✅ Ethically Produced

✅ GMO-free

✅ No Glyphosate

✅ No Nasties

✅ 100% Natural

✅ No added sugar

✅ Nothing Synthetic

The fact is, that they will not bring a product to market that does not meet their entire criteria because it won't be good enough for you!

Potential Benefits of Acerola

Acerola is naturally high in vitamin C but it also contains B vitamins, beta-carotene, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc.

It also contains antioxidants that can help us in many ways, in which we will discuss...

Help to Prevent Scurvy

There are always early warning signs with any illness and scurvy is no exception.

Early Signs of Scurvy Development:

  1. Feeling weak often
  2. Little to no appetite
  3. Irritability
  4. Exhaustion
  5. Aching legs

If the early warning signs are ignored, you may go on to develop scurvy itself and that will manifest in the following symptoms:

  • Anemia
  • Gingivitis and Tooth Decay
  • Skin Haemorrhage
  • Bruise-like bumps at the hair follicle
  • Red-black bruising - especially legs and feet
  • Swollen tender joints
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in the chest
  • Eye issues
  • Blurry vision
  • Poor wound-healing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Mood swings

Anti-Ageing Benefits

Acerola cherries are high in nutrition as mentioned and antioxidants that help to mop up free radicals. As you may know, free radicals cause oxidative stress and rapid ageing so the more we can obtain antioxidants form our diet, the better off we will be!

Adding organic acerola is one powerful way to do this!

Natural Anti-Inflammatory

Inflammation is a natural bodily process but when it gets out of hand, and chronic, that is when we have a problem.

Personally, I don't believe in fighting it (or fighting anything for that matter), but rather supporting the body through diet and lifestyle choices to keep it low.

Inflammation when unchecked, can lead to disease and illness and ageing as well!

By adding in a natural vitamin C such as acerola cherry, you can help to keep on top of inflammation and help extend lifespan. 🙂

Natural Immune Support

Research has shown that antioxidants (such as bioflavonoids and polyphenols) may help to prevent cancer, improve cognition (brain function) and support the immune system.

Acerola is naturally very high in bioavailable vitamin C and this nutrient is not only an antioxidant as well but has been shown to support our immune system to help defend against any threat.

May Help Metabolic Health

Did you know that vitamin C plays a role in the metabolism of your cells? In fact, it plays many roles in cellular functions - including neurophysiology, oxidative stress and even learning and memory processes.

It can help to support metabolism by helping to keep inflammation low (acerola in particular as it's so nutrient-dense)!

Gut Health

Acerola cherries are a good source of fibre which is known to help the gut in many ways. There are also of course others who don't believe we need fibre at all but i am unsure about this at this stage of writing this blog (though I am doing much research into the carnivore diet).

It has also been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat digestive issues.

Cognition and Brain Health

If you want a sharp mind, a healthy brain and a great memory, you must be consuming regularly, foods that support brain health and brain function.

Acerola is considered a "brain food" because of the anthocyanins and phytonutrients it contains, for these particular compounds help to reduce both oxidative stress and inflammation that can damage brain cells and neurons.

Boosts Energy

Consuming acerola cherries (or taking in a supplement) can help us to increase our energy levels and get us through our day.  The reason that acerola can help with energy production is because it contains both vitamin C and B vitamins (both of these play a role here).

Boosts and Maintains Collagen

If you're already enjoying the benefits of taking a high-quality collagen supplement, you'll most likely notice further improvement in your skin if you add in a high-quality vitamin C superfood such as Perfect Organic Acerola!

Vitamin C is known to boost collagen production and also help to maintain it.

Supports Dental Health

Acerola has the ability to kill certain microbes and has been added to antimicrobial mouthwashes but as you may be aware, conventional mouthwash contain harmful chemicals that can be detrimental to our mouth microbiome!

A healthy mouth microbiome has a powerful and positive effect on our gut microbiome (as everything is connected) and so a better option for oral hygiene than chemical-laden mouthwash would be to make your own with Perfect raw coconut oil and 1/4 tsp of Perfect Acerola powder!

All you need is to mixx 1/4 tsp into a heaped tsp of coconut oil and swish it in your mouth for 15 minutes then spit it out.

This practice is known as 'oil pulling' and it has been practiced in Ayurvedic traditions for centuries! It is a natural, non-toxic way to clean your mouth and gums and does not destroy your mouth and gut microbiome. 🙂

Adrenal Health

Did you know that vitamin C plays a crucial role in adrenal function and adrenal health?

Did you also know that:

  • It's a fact that the highest concentration of vitamin C is stored in your adrenal glands
  • Your adrenals utilise vitamin C for the production of adrenal hormones - especially cortisol. When you experience stress, your vitamin C gets used up quickly due to the production of the stress-response hormone Cortisol
  • When you have adrenal fatigue, your adrenal glands freak out if you don't have enough vitamin C. If this happens it can create anxiety but also affect your blood sugar, blood pressure and may lead to belly fat! 🙁

For this and other reasons, we created our own version of an 'adrenal cocktail' which is essentially a healing, health elixir and powerful electrolyte drink. By adding in a drink such as this to your morning routine you can help to support the healing of your adrenal glands and give them the nourishment they need.

When our body's are fully supported by proper nutrition and lifestyle practices, we can allow for the healing to occur.

Find our adrenal cocktail recipe here.

We also have many blogs about adrenal health and adrenal fatigue. You can find them here.

Contains Quercetin

Quercetin has many potential benefits for ones health as well and fortunately you don't need to look too far to find it. You can find it in many plant foods such as acerola cherries

The Potential Benefits of Quercetin Are:

  • Helping to ease allergies by acting to suppress histamine
  • Helping reduce inflammation
  • May have anti-cancer effects
  • Lower risk of brain disorders
  • May help with blood pressure
  • Has been shown to help in early CO-VID

Other Benefits of Vitamin C

The list goes on and on when it comes to the benefits of vitamin C but to keep this blog readable, I will not go into too much more detail, I will just finish though to tell you that vitamin C can help to reduce uric acid (preventing gout), helping to lower the risk of heart disease, managing low blood pressure, helping with carbohydrate consumption, reducing the risk of chronic disease, helping to prevent iron deficiency, protect our brain and much more!

Now the question is... have YOU added acerola to your life yet? 😊
