Ashwagandha is a herbal supplement that has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

Health benefits of Ashwagandha with studies

1. Supports Adrenal Health: Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to support healthy adrenal function. One study found that supplementation of ashwagandha was associated with a significant reduction in cortisol levels in individuals with chronic stress (1).

2. May Reduce Anxiety and Depression Symptoms: Several studies have shown that ashwagandha can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. One study found that supplementation of ashwagandha root extract reduced anxiety and depression scores in individuals with stress-related fatigue (2).

3. May Improve Cognitive Function: Studies have shown that ashwagandha may improve cognitive performance and reduce fatigue in both healthy individuals and those with cognitive impairment (3).

4. May Help Improve Sleep Quality: Ashwagandha has been found to improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep in both healthy individuals and those with insomnia (4).

It may also reduce the time it takes to fall asleep and increase the length of time spent in deep sleep.

5. May Reduce Inflammation: Several studies have found that ashwagandha can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress (5).

6. May Improve Cardiovascular Health: Studies have found that ashwagandha can reduce cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). It can also increase the production of HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) and reduce the risk of heart disease.

7. Ashwagandha may help the brain (according to the research). It may improve mood, concentration, and focus.

Does Ashwagandha help the the brain?

Research suggests that it may help improve memory and cognitive function by increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine, and reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

It has also been found to improve the function of the hippocampus, a region of the brain that plays a key role in memory formation and recall. Therefore, ashwagandha may be beneficial for people with memory and cognitive issues, such as those associated with ageing or Alzheimer's disease.
