The Efficacy and Safety of a Green Coffee Bean Extract in Overweight Subjects

The University of Scranton recently conducted a study on the effects of Green Coffee Bean Extract and weight loss. The results were then published in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity Journal.

In this double blind, placebo controlled human study, 16 overweight adults between the ages of 22 and 46 were randomly given varying doses of Green Coffee Bean Extract (700mg and 1050mg) and matching placebos over a 22 week period. The subjects did not alter their diet or exercise.

At the end of the 22 week period, subjects lost an average of 17 pounds, which is approximately 10.5% of their body weight and 16% of their body fat. Research suggests that if the subjects had only received the high dose, and not the lower dose and placebo, the weight loss results would have been even more significant.

The Blood Pressure-Lowering Effect and Safety of Chlorogenic Acid from Green Coffee Bean Extract

“In the Chlorogenic Acid group, but not the placebo group, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) decreased significantly during the ingestion period. There was no difference in body mass index and pulse rate between groups, nor were there any apparent side effects. Thus, Chlorogenic Acid from Green Coffee Extract is effective in decreasing blood pressure and safe for patients with mild hypertension.”

Chlorogenic Acid Contributes to the Beneficial Effects of Coffee on Diabetes

A study performed by the Department of Pharmacology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and published in 2012. Quoting from the article…

“Chlorogenic Acid (CGA) has been shown to delay intestinal glucose absorption. A significant decrease in fasting blood sugar was observed 10 minutes after the administration of 250 mg/kg of CGA and the effect persisted for another 30 minutes after the glucose challenge. Our data demonstrated for the first time that Chlorogenic Acid stimulates glucose transport. It appears that CGA may contribute to the beneficial effects of coffee on Type 2 diabetes.”
