Coconut Oil History

Coconut oil is extracted from the seed of the coconut palm tree.

Named “coco” which means “monkey face” by early Spanish explorers because the coconut looked like the head and face of a monkey, the scientific name for the coconut is Cocos Nucifera. The word Nucifera means “nut-bearing”.

Populations who were native to lands where palm trees grew soon found that the coconut was a strong addition to their diets. The palm tree seeds provided a nutritious source of coconut meat, juice, milk, and oil that fed and healed these populations for generations. In fact, coconuts are a staple in many cultural diets to this very day.

Asian and Pacific populations have not only used coconut oil for its dietary purposes, but also for its healing properties. Pacific Islanders still use coconut oil today as a cure for illness. The giving coconut has an extensive past, but its origins are debatable. Fossils of the coconut palm go back as far as15 million years in locations including New Zealand and Bangladesh.

Mentions of the coconut may have been dated as far back as the 4th century BC, in the Mahawamsa of Sri Lanka. The coconut is also featured in many Indian paintings and Hindu stories such as Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas. The Indians call the coconut “sriphala” which means “fruit of the gods.”

In the Western part of the world, when we think of the coconut, we think of Hawaii. The coconut was introduced to Hawaii by early Polynesian travelers. The coconut palm fairs well in places with sandy soils, high temperatures, and high humidity. In the US, these conditions only occur in Hawaii and Southern Florida.

Another climate that nurtures the coconut well is in the Philippines. In fact, the Philippine Islands were the top coconut producers in 2009, and this has been of great economic benefit to this struggling country.
